Dovestone
March 30th 2008

The 30th of March saw the arrival of the Dovestones event.

Ten winners from the prize draw held at the Revolution at the Manchester Velodrome attended an all day Mountain Bike Skills Session

The weather was kind and the rain held off for the ride out, both in the morning and the afternoon

The group of winners were of mixed age and ability, working well together as a group, giving each other help and encouragement along the route (especially on the hills and in the deepest of bogs!). The only mechanical failures included a puncture, two dubious seat posts and a snapped chain-all quickly repaired by the NCA CYTECH technicians present

We arranged to meet up at the main car park and after a delayed start, the group set off following the path around the reservoir before diverting off onto a shorter technical trail to the left of the lake

Whilst utilising the track, the riders practised some new techniques and the NCA MTB Instructors were able to assess the rider’s level of ability, offering tips and advice about how to tackle the trail.

The riders then retired for lunch and a hard earned break before setting off for the afternoon ride

The afternoon session set off from the car park heading in the opposite direction, passing the sailing club on the left and following the track. After a brief but steep climb (which saw off Jools, the NCA course director, ‘there’s something wrong with this bike’!!), the group set off on a trail to the right off the track. Dropping down a short gully, leading to a drop off, the group used their new found skills to successfully negotiate the trail. Parts of the track were quite technical but the riders coped well with rocky sections, peaty bogs and pine woods. After cycling through a stream, the trail led to the final descent

The final descent was a rock strewn track where the group were able to build up some speed whilst carefully negotiating the terrain, after an exhilarating ride down the track we ended up back at the trail starting point.

The day was concluded when each prize winner was given a trail tour polo shirt and a goody bag by Course Director Julie Woodruff
