Bike Week 14th – 22nd June
Prestwich Carnival, a charity fundraising event promoted by the Sunshine Club, Chaired by David Curtis and supported by local MP Ivan Lewis gave NCA the perfect opportunity to promote National Bike Week in our local patch.
OK, so the weather wasn't brilliant to start with but the turn-out was fantastic. And, eventually the sun burst through the clouds and gave us a beautiful afternoon.

Participants; Bury Cycle Speedway Club, local primary school teachers and school children

Mike on the NCA stall before the procession arrived and he was inundated by cyclists after the free t-shirts, balloons, stickers and cycling information about routes and various Sustrans projects throughout the area. Free ‘Bike It’ t-shirts provided by Bury council’s Senior Transportation Officer, Nicola Lee. New design Bury cycle maps provided by Bury Council Greenspace Projects Manager, Chris Wilkinson. Many were seen wandering off with broad smiles and goody bags packed to the brim!
The CTC provided their literature and promotional items to encourage more people to become involved in cycling - it worked guys.

NCA staff joined in the carnival procession with a number of local cyclists, young and old, to promote the new Bikeability cycle training scheme now operating in primary schools through the country. Handing out leaflets, information and giving advice to the local community to encourage cycling activities throughout the Bury area

After the procession, the junior section of local cycle speedway team, the Bury Comets, gave a demonstration of Cycle Speedway racing on a track laid out on St Mary’s Park. Club chairman, Tony Mann, was on hand to encourage the general public to have a go and give talks about the history of the sport

Also on hand were BMX and skateboard experts from the Phoenix Youth Centre, St Mary’s Park, cheered on by Kerry Freeman and James Perkins from Bury Youth Services. The team gave an excellent display of skills and techniques using ramps and specialist equipment, showing that there is a huge demand locally for a BMX and skatepark facility
