Explanation of courses
1/ A non rider can have the pedal cranks removed and be taught the principle of balance and co-ordination in order to build confidence and with encouragement, getting them to ride in a safe, fun environment using appropriate coaching equipment. Conducted in small groups of two or three riders at a time with one Instructor

2/ A beginner rider of limited ability can receive training based in a traffic free environment such as a car park or playground, with a view to increasing their skill level using correct techniques. Emergency braking, balance, cornering, signalling, gears etc are covered. This training would be with one/two Instructors to no more than fifteen children in a group, utilising cone layouts, limbo poles and fun games.

3/ A young rider with some general aptitude and experience can be coached using quiet areas with low traffic volume. After an assessment of skill level before going onto the road, this type of training includes road positioning, signals, road junctions, braking etc. This will be a ratio of one Instructor to six children in an on road situation. Children need to be nine years old and above to participate on this course

Training will be based on a combination of British Cycling Go Ride sessions and CTC National Standards or Bikeability.

All training will be conducted by qualified British Cycling level two coaches and CTC trained National Standards Instructors who have up to date CRB’s, Insurance and First Aid certificates.

All venues or training areas will be risk assessed in written form beforehand and dynamically risk assessed at/during the time of training.

Children must wear cycle helmets, preferably provided by parents but helmets will be made available by the NCA if booked in advance

Whilst this project is primarily aimed at school age children, the training is also available to adults/families/groups and maybe conducted on a one to one basis up to National Standards level three

We are also happy to train other family members at the same rate under the same scheme but groups will deliberately be kept to small numbers to ensure individual attention to coached techniques. This follows our best practice procedures

In addition to the coached sessions, we have invited Greater Manchester Police to attend with a view to security stamping those expensive new bikes during the event. The Police will be available to give advice on cycle locks and general cycle/road safety issues; we welcome them to the event and thank them for their help in raising awareness

Ok, so now you know how it works, it’s just a question of how to get involved!
